Today on Gus’ Gear I will continue the story of Johannes Mäurer with a look at two newspaper clippings, the first from January of 1915 and the second from November of 1933.
This is a newspaper from Herr Mäurer’s grouping that tells of Hindenburg’s triumphant advance. It is an example of how we need to take all news reports of events with a grain of salt. This article tells of the successes of the battles in the east, but is a very different narative from what KriegsFreiwilliger Johannes Mäurer tells of his view of the battle.
Here is a transcription from a clipping from the “Greizer Zeitung und Tageblatt” dated Sonday 19. November 1933.
I typed the transcription, so expect to see some typos, the newspaper from 1915 tells of this campaign, but there is no mention of the difficulties experienced by the 96th Regiment. I thought that it must be written by Johannes Mäurer (it is not, this was written by a man in the Machinegun Konpanie) but the stories use much of the same language.
