A “Flohmarkt” Find – A Calendar from 1914
I was recently in a Flohmarkt in Munich. There is a big one just besides the Olympia Stadium but to be honest, it is almost a waste of time to go there. I was one hour and saw a few pictures, nothing special; I saw no orders or medals and found 2 interesting things. I got just 1 of them.
And for a few euros, I got this “Kalender des Deutsches Flottens Verein” dated 1914… not a very quite year, I am afraid.
It has a small size: around 20 x 14 x 1 Cms and it looks inside more like a magazine than like a small book itself. It shows the months of the year with some very important events or battles, that occurred in that month in previous years, like the Battle of Sedan in September 1870.
Also we find many stories inside, for example about the life Colonies. Also we find some interesting pictures and a few funny pictures. Almost at the end of the book, we see the list of all of ships of the “Kaiserliche Marine”. Another great “feature” of it is… the advertisements at the end of the Calendar. They are just great and very interesting (specially the one about getting back the whole hair… I am very interested on that one hehehe).
Without any doubt, it has been a good catch.
And about the Deutscher Flotten Verein, well it was an association created at the very end of the XIX Century to influence the people about the importance of having a powerful fleet. Obviously the association was very influenced by the “Kaiserliche Marine” as well as by many companies, which were involved in the construction of the Fleet or had interests in its construction.
See what it is next….
