A7V 542 ‘Elfriede’ was originally issued to Abteilung.2 in early April 1918 by B.A.K.P. 20 and first saw combat on 24 April near Villers-Bretonneux where it slipped into a sandpit and fell on its right side, its crew formed an Assault Team and joined the local infantry.
The tank was salvaged by the French on 15 May and was transported to Saleux where it was found to be still in running condition. It was fully inspected and filmed on 18 May by French and British men and afterwards taken to a firing range where all sorts of weapons were tested on it in July until transferred to Paris to be put on display the Place de la Concorde until it was scrapped in 1919.
