Friederich von Erckert (December 30, 1869 in Bromberg, † March 16, 1908 in Seatsub, Bechuanaland, now Botswuana) was a German officer of the Schutztruppe. Due to the first notable introduction of dromedaries into the German army, he is considered the “father of the camel troop”. From August 18, 1895 to August 18, 1897, he was an instruction officer (“instructor”) in the Chilean army. That is why he looks proud in his uniforms (the first of the Kaiser’s Guard and the second of the Schutztruppe (German colonial troops in Africa) the medal for distinguished services to the government of Chile and its Army.
