This Thursday, on Rui’s Renditions I bring you a used, but unfortunately undated, postcard from Sam Wouters collection depicting two tanned Jäger from most probably Jäger-zu-Pferde Regiment Nr.3 from Kolmar*. Location unknown
On the reverse, the sender, Fahrer Philipp Cezanne from Bespannungsabteilung 8, 1. Zug, simply wrote (translation courtesy of xiphophilos):
“Here I am sending you also a souvenir from the Jäger. Regards, Philipp”
According to Sam, Bespannungsabteilungen (harnessing units) were usually attached to Fußartillerie-Regiments, Train-, Fernsprech- or Luftschiffer-Bataillone. If Philipp’s unit was temporarily attached to this particular Jäger zu Pferde Regiment or was simply stationed nearby is unfortunately unknown.
*Possible unit and location:
Concerning the two possible units, which were selected based on the Köllerborte’s grey tones, I decided to colorize the uniforms in the colors of Regiment nr.3 (yellow) given that Regiment nr.4 (light blue) would show as almost white and should, in principle, be visible against the green shoulder straps. Yellow would most probably blend in with the green. Under close observation, the straps’ piping is barely discernible supporting yellow as the correct color.
The photographer, Adolf Krämer-Deckler, was from Freiburg, 50 km east of Kolmar (today’s Colmar, France), which might further support the Jäger-zu-Pferde Regiment Nr.3 hypothesis given that Regiment Nr.4 was from Graudenz, today’s Grudziadz in Poland.
