Right, i have previously told the story of German Gewehr 88/05 sent as aid to the Ottoman empire. The story behind that can be found here:
So, just to recapitulate, I have previously shown one with Ottoman numbers on the rear sight, and no other Ottoman markings. The second one has Ottoman markings on the Czech replacement bolt, but none on the rifle.
One can not say that they had a unified policy for marking those weapons. However it might possibly also have to do with when the rifles came to the Ottoman Empire?
Anyway. This one is different. It is all German imperial, original German sling, imperial bolt in the white, German standard numbering on the rear sight. However there is one sign of Ottoman use and ownership.
On the receiver a crude crescent has been stamped.
Also the receiver has been blued, which I suppose is a post-WWI Turkish thing. The blued receiver and sometimes blued bolt is not uncommon on Ottoman/Turkish used rifles. In imperial configuration the receiver will have been in the white.
So, now you know about three different variations of such markings. More will follow…. These Gew98 have quite a history to them, also with the Greco-Turkish war and the mutual ethnic cleansing that followed. These guns saw use at least into the 1950s.
