Freikorps Roßbach soldiers

BANDOW’S BEST
This week on Bandow’s Best, I would like to share this photo of Freikorps Roßbach soldiers during the Kapp-Putsch in Wismar, Mecklenburg-Schwerin March 1920.
In March 1920, a group of Reichswehr leaders attempted to overthrow the Weimar Republic with a military coup, the Kapp-Putsch. The fighting that followed hit the city of Wismar particularly hard. A general strike called by the workers to defend the republic was carried out with unusual rigor in Wismar. The waterworks were shut down and the small garrison stationed in the local barracks was besieged by armed workers.
On March 19, 1920, the Reichswehr occupied the city, largely without resistance. Several armed workers who were caught trying to escape were shot dead.
