Pioneers- wearing a waterproof suit

Rui’s Renditions
Unfortunately of poor quality, this interesting photo shows German soldiers -supposedly Pioneers- wearing a waterproof suit, completed with a floating device around their waists and a paddling apparatus. Something I had never seen or heard of before. No date or location is available.
I have no idea what colour the waterproof suits were so I used a warm grey tone with the intent of making them stand out from the surroundings and allow for the details of this interesting piece of equipment to be more easily visualized.
Note: Instead of trying to fix the grainy texture of the original, I decided to use it to my advantage and take the opportunity to try and mimic the colour photos of the period which, due to the developing method used (autochrome technique using potato starch), usually present a mix of vivid and subdued colours with a characteristic grainy texture.
